In a world filled with – often unhealthy – modern conveniences, becoming and staying healthy can feel like an uphill battle, but these tips are here to help you on your way. 

1. Clean Up Your Diet

Between work and home life, you have a lot on your plate as it is, so getting healthy, nutritious meals on the dinner table can sometimes feel like an extra chore on an already packed to-do list. Fortunately, eating cleanly isn’t as time intensive as it may seem. Make a few simple swaps, such as grabbing a fresh apple instead of a bag of chips for a midday snack or loading your plate with fibrous veggies on pizza night.

2. Get Moving

Exercise doesn’t only keep you at a healthy weight. It also boosts your body’s immune system, helps you to fall and stay asleep and floods your body with mood-boosting endorphins. Find a workout or activity that works for you, and aim for about 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. 

3. Start a Mindfulness Practice

Researchers and practitioners alike are more frequently singing the praises of mindfulness. The ability to direct your awareness to your present moment without judgment has been shown to strengthen the neural pathways in your brain that help you to feel happier and more relaxed. 

If mindfulness and meditation seem daunting at first, simply start with a gratitude journal. The more aware you are of the things in your life that are going right, the easier it will be to trudge through some of the tougher things. 

4. Get Organized

Most people lose their wallet or keys at one point or another, but numerous occurrences can really contribute to your overall stress levels. Whether it’s your email inbox or your sock drawer, take some time to clear some of the clutter and noise. With more order and less clutter in your environment, it will be easier to navigate through your day – and to find respite in a neat space at the end of it. 

5. Catch Some Z’s

Sleep deprivation can have severe consequences. If you have trouble getting a good night’s rest during the week, you may feel fatigued, foggy or even ill. Getting on a good sleep schedule is not only good for your physical health, but it’s necessary for your mental health, too. 

Contrary to popular belief, catching up on sleep on the weekends by sleeping in can actually interfere with your ability to rest during the work week. Experts recommend setting a consistent sleep schedule and sticking to it, even on vacation, in order to regulate your body’s circadian rhythm and support good sleep habits. 

6. Fill Your Water Bottle

Most adults don’t drink enough water, and the sensation of thirst indicates that your body is already dehydrated. For a few compelling reasons to keep your water bottle close, hydration supports a healthy immune system, encourages a balanced appetite, aids in digestion and flushes your body of harmful toxins. 

7. Get Some Sunlight

Lower levels of vitamin D are found in people with depression and weakened immune systems. In fact, seasonal depression is thought to be caused by increased time indoors and less exposure to sunlight, so getting out into the great outdoors to catch some rays is a great way to support your own wellness. Just be sure to pack the sunscreen. 

8. Rethink Bad Habits

Everyone has a few practices, rituals or patterns that aren’t exactly serving them. Start by taking an inventory of your daily routines, identify places that could use some improvement and commit to changing your behaviors to emphasize your own nourishment and fulfillment.

9. Embody Your Values

If life went according to plan, your beliefs about yourself and the world would fully inform your daily actions, but sometimes other feelings and situations get in the way of your ability to really show up to each situation in a way that feels true to who you are. Make a list of your personal values and commit to acting in accordance with them, especially in the face of conflict and strife.

Ultimately, you are in control of your actions and reactions. The harder you work to exemplify your wellness objectives, the better, and healthier, you will feel.
